Guadalajara Reporter – Another Nureyev in the making?

GUADALAJARA – Like Tapatia golden girl golfer Lorena Ochoa, local ballet talent Isaac Hernandez looks set to conquer the highest levels of his discipline.

Dancer

During his teenage years, Guadalajara’s Isaac Hernandez received dozens of accolades from city and state authorities for his remarkable dancing talents.

“Corps member Isaac Hernandez does not have Domitro’s charisma [recent Ballet Nacional de Cuba defector Taras Domitro], but he made an indelible impression in Balanchine’s ‘Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux’ with his beautifully stretched jumps and perfect double air tours with soft, tight landings,” wrote San Francisco Chonicle reviewer Rachel Howard.

Hernandez made his successful professional debut on Wednesday, January 21 alongside veteran dancers, as a principal with the San Francisco Ballet, the oldest professional ballet company in the United States.

Melamaine Tainted milk trial opens in China

by @ 1:32 pm. Filed under China, food chain, health care

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Tainted milk trial opens in China
When the scandal broke in September, a chain of melamine producers and middlemen was found to have been supplying milk dealers with the product.

The dealers added melamine to boost the apparent protein content of milk, which had often been watered down to spread the raw product further.

Major dairy companies bought the milk from such dealers, failing to test the milk for purity and nutritional value.

Daily Kos: Chinese Melamine Scandal Far More Widespread Than Thought

This from Richard Spencer in Beijing, this morning:

A statement posted on online government media overnight said that 294,000 babies and young children had suffered “urinary system abnormalities” after drinking formula milk from Sanlu, the company most seriously affected, and other brand names.

It now says as many as six infants died and up to 294,000 suffered from urinary tract ailments including kidney stones. That figure is a lot higher than had previously been reported. More than 850 children are still being treated in hospital; at least 150 of them are said to be seriously ill. Why? Last year, China’s dairy industry was worth $18 billion. That’s a whole lot of dairy products.

Reproductive health awareness growing

by @ 10:26 pm. Filed under Fiji

Reproductive health awareness growing – Fiji Times Online
Update: 12:48PM AWARENESS on reproductive health is growing and Fijis 18-29-year-old group may lead the way in the increased use of condoms, a United Nations Population Fund report said.

The future may also see younger families considering more options with contraceptives as taking control is becoming economically important.

With urban drift, there will be a change in the use of health care services.

“Those who successfully leave for the town life, but come under the more severe financial pressures are more likely to change their traditional lifestyle and delay child bearing, and limit family size,” the report said.
